WHY SSKEIN IS BUILT ON KNITWEAR

When we started SSKEIN, we made a very intentional decision: we were not going to be a brand that makes everything. We were going to focus on one category and do it well. For us, that category is knitwear.

Knitwear is not just another product category. It is a completely different way of making clothes.

Most clothing—woven and cut-and-sew knits—is made by cutting pattern pieces out of large rolls of fabric and sewing them together. This process is efficient, but it produces leftover fabric scraps, which often become waste.

Knitwear can be different.

With techniques such as fully fashioned knitwear, knit-to-shape, and whole-garment knitting, many knitwear pieces are made by building the garment directly from yarn rather than cutting it from fabric. This method can significantly reduce material waste because the garment is shaped on the knitting machine as it is being made.

This is sometimes referred to as zero-waste knitting, and while no process is perfectly zero waste, it can be far more efficient than traditional cut-and-sew production.

At SSKEIN, we think about knitwear as yarn engineering. Every decision—the fiber, the yarn thickness, the stitch structure, the gauge—affects how the garment feels, drapes, stretches, and lasts over time. We are not just designing how something looks; we are designing how it is built from the very beginning.

Our materials are also an important part of this decision. We work primarily with natural fibers like alpaca and wool. These are biodegradable fibers, renewable resources, and when cared for properly, they can last for many years.

This brings us to another reason we focus on knitwear: long product lifespan.

A well-made sweater should not be worn for just one season. It should be worn for many years, repaired if needed, and passed on. Knitwear, when made with good yarn and good construction, can do that.

So when people ask why we don't make wovens or cut-and-sew t-shirts, the answer is not that we can't. It's that we are choosing to focus.

We believe in specializing.

We believe in understanding one category deeply.

We believe in making fewer things, but making them better.

SSKEIN is not trying to be a brand that makes everything.

We are trying to be a company that makes knitwear—thoughtfully, responsibly, and with intention.
